J. Roberts, LLC is a law practice focused on representing individuals, businesses and health care providers in government investigations, white collar litigation, regulatory reviews and compliance counseling. The practice is built on twenty years of experience at the highest levels of both the public and private sectors.
Founding member Justin J. Roberts has experience representing both the United States and private clients in federal courts across the country. J. Roberts, LLC can assist clients in conducting internal investigations and in responding to government subpoenas. It can handle a variety of subjects including health care fraud, tax controversies, public corruption and securities fraud.
Roberts also has extensive experience in matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He has worked on international bribery, fraud and money laundering investigations with agencies such as the Serious Fraud Office in Great Britain, New Scotland Yard and the City of London police as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and investigators from the province of Ontario.
One former United States Attorney referred to Justin as a "go to prosecutor who has handled matters ranging from international allegations of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations to bribery and corruption by elected and appointed officials" and "a skilled and respected attorney and advocate." In private practice, Justin has counseled clients in health care and foreign bribery matters where no criminal charges have been brought following the execution of search warrants and their designation as targets.
Founding member Justin J. Roberts is a seasoned advocate who has spent his entire legal career working on government investigations and white collar criminal matters. He started in the Corporate Criminal Investigations practice at an international law firm in Washington, D.C. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Economic Crimes Unit of the District of Nevada where he was head of the Corporate Fraud Task Force. Following that, Justin was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Major Fraud & Corruption Unit of the Northern District of Ohio where he worked closely with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and was awarded some of the highest honors in the Department of Justice for his work on several high profile public corruption matters. Roberts then served as a Partner at a national law firm where he was head of both the Government Enforcement Investigations and White Collar Criminal Defense practices. He is admitted to practice in Ohio, New York and Washington, D.C. Roberts has written numerous articles on white collar criminal matters and has served as a guest lecturer and speaker at several law schools and bar association events. He currently serves on the White Collar Crime Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Justin counsels clients on all types of government enforcement issues including grand jury investigations, SEC enforcement actions, Medicare/Medicaid reviews, IRS investigations and whistleblower complaints. He has significant experience in securities matters such as insider trading and FCPA violations. He has also assisted numerous health care clients in response to improper billing allegations.
Justin conducts internal investigations and assists clients with compliance planning. He was involved in the creation of the Northeast Ohio Business Ethics Coalition to assist area companies with compliance strategies.
He has handled a wide variety of white collar related matters including antitrust, theft of trade secrets and economic espionage, state and local corruption, campaign finance violations, environmental offenses, aggravated identity theft and labor union corruption.
Justin served for over 10 years as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Major Fraud and Corruption Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio. During this time, he tried significant matters involving investment adviser fraud, false certifications in government contracts, tax evasion and corruption involving a sitting state court judge. He has argued a dozen cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeal for both the Sixth and Ninth Circuits. Before working in the Northern District of Ohio, he served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the White Collar and Economic Crimes section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada where he focused on securities and corporate fraud. Prior to that, Justin worked as an associate in the Corporate Criminal Investigations section of an international law firm in Washington, D.C.
He received the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award, the second highest honor in the Department of Justice, for his part of the work involving public corruption in Cuyahoga County. He has received multiple commendations from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for his work on matters including a major market manipulation case that resulted in the conviction of two stockbrokers and their client, a theft of trade secrets matter that resulted in the conviction of the U.S. subsidiary of a South African company and for the successful corruption trial of a Regional Transit Authority Construction Manager. Justin received a commendation from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for his work involving a major Ponzi scheme run by an area minister and the IRS Award of Excellence.
Justin is also member of the Federal, American and Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations and participates in their criminal law related sections.
Justin earned his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, where he was a member of the American Journal of Criminal Law. He earned his B.A. summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin.
